Alex Speiser makes me smile. He is a young man with a great smile and a passionate heart. I loved his spirit and his desire to serve and help others. I met him at an event several months back and as we talked I felt he had something to share with our audience and invited him at that time. His message was one of hope. He opened the scriptures and shared his understanding of the common story of Captain Moroni. I found his insights helpful and brought me new understanding. I loved what he said about preparation and putting on the armor of God and how to help grow our testimonies. You will enjoy this presentation.

Mary Ann has been one of my heroes since I met her five years ago. I asked her to speak at my very first event. After it was all over I asked her what advise she had for me and she said, "Just don't stop. Keep going no matter what." I still use that advise whenever I feel like giving up. Mary Ann choose conversational style and we got started right away. She had some wonderful things to say about becoming present more often with our children. She opened up the scriptures and read directly from God's word. I was completely captivated by her message. The noise level started picking up in the house toward the end of her interview and we felt rushed to finish it. I was sad to have to push it, because I know I could have learned a lot more. Her message is one to listen to if you have children. She also gave the audience access to a chapter in her new book. Lori is a beautiful person. She came to the door dressed beautifully. As we visited she seemed sad and I asked her about her day. She had had a rough few weeks, but didn't want to not do this. She had prepared a presentation on stress, something that was helping her deal with her current stresses. She was a perfect example of how presenters present messages on what they have over come and just because she was in the middle of stress didn't mean she should stop - keep going no matter what. She talked about the different types of stresses and focused on the stress of fear and then gave some practical ways to over come fear. Jeanie walked in prepared for teaching. She brought her paper and markers to help her share her message. She is a blast to have around, full of energy, excitement and spontaneity. As we sat down together to make a plan of action she opened up and shared her vision and we made a plan to fit that vision. It was fun to improvise and learn a new way. I sat down as the representation of the 5000 people - in other words I was her guinea pig. :) In her presentation she asked me the questions and I answered them honestly. She got me to realize that some of my dreams were not coming true because of a negative belief I have/had about not being smart enough. (Yeah, that one still comes up). At one time she asked me to write a name I had been called onto a label. I wrote, Breasta, as that was my common nick name in junior high among to boys. She then asked me to put it on someone else - well the only person at that time in the room was Dave, our producer, so I labeled him. She asked me how that felt and I said, "Weird, not good at all, it didn't even fit." "Good." she said, "That's exactly what its suppose to feel like." Well, she didn't see the label and I looked over at Dave in hopes to get a smile out of him and he frowned. If you have ever been bullied or listened to those negative voices in your head, you will want to hear this presentation. She will help guide you and give you tools to fight back and win over those voices. Welcome to Called to LearnAllow me show you how we have renovated the LDS Homeschool Conference:

We are all called to learn more, to continue in learning throughout our whole lives. Each of us have a specific mission with unique things to learn. What are you Called to Learn? God called ancient Israel "My Called." What does that mean? We find this title in Isaiah 48:12 which reads, "Hearken unto me, [my children] O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last." What he means is all those called to the covenant, anyone who has made a covenant with him. A few months back I was listening to K-LOVE and heard this statement, "We can do what we’ve been called to do because God will always do what he is promised." What a blessing it is to know that God will always keep his promises and thus we can do and accomplish all the things he has asked us to do. Here are some statements I have found about being called and about learning:
According to Isaiah, Living Water is spiritual nourishment. Living water is living because it comes from Christ, the Source of all righteousness. Living water is found all around, in the temples, in chapels, in baptismal fonts, etc. (see Isaiah 40:19)
In my CES Isaiah class we studied Isaiah 41:18-19 which reads: I will open rivers in high places [living waters in the temples], and fountains in the midst of the valleys [churches]: I will make the wilderness a pool of [living] water, and the dry land springs of [living] water. I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together: There is both a physical and a spiritual interpretation for these verses: Physical Interpretation: It is written of the Salt Lake valley, it will not be foresaken, the valley will be full of many types of trees (every street and every property will have trees); it is a stunning valley! Brigham Young said that the population of the west will far surpass that on the East side. Spiritual Interpretation: Living Water is found all around, in the temples, chapels, in the baptismal fonts, etc. There will be many temples and chapels (verse 18), Trees are a symbol for growth provided by living water. Trees provide shade, rest, nourishment and materials from which we can spiritually built our lives. God wants us to be filled, satisfied, uplifted and he has given us living water (trees) for that purpose. President Romney linkened the Book of Mormon to living water,“But there is another reason why we should read [The Book of Mormon]. By doing so we will fill and refresh our minds with the constant flow of that ‘water’ which Jesus said would be in us—‘a well of water springing up into everlasting life.’ (John 4:14.) We must obtain a continuing supply of this water if we are to resist evil and retain the blessings of being born again." Isaiah also reminds us of when Moses with the help of God brought water to the thirsty Israelites. Not only physical water but also spiritual or living water. "And they thirsted [spiritual thirst] not when he [Moses] led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out." They never had to thirst physically nor spiritually for God provided them with water and living water. Here the lyrics to a song that talks about living water: There Is A River Words and Music by Max and David Sapp There is a river that flows from deep within. There is a fountain that frees the soul from sin. Come to these waters, there is a vast supply. There is a river that never shall run dry. There came a sound from Heaven, like a mighty rushing wind. It filled their hearts with singing and gave them peace within. The Master gave this promise, the Spirit will descend And from your inner being a river with no end. There came a thirsty woman, who was drawing from a well. Her life was ruined and wasted, her soul was bound for Hell. But then she met the Master, who told of her great sin And if you’ll drink this water, you’ll never thirst again. There is a river that flows from God above. There is a fountain, that’s filled with His great love. Come to the water, there is a vast supply. There is a river, that never shall run dry. That never shall run dry. The Conference name was changed to Called to Learn conference. We have decided this because the LDS church has asked a few of our friends to change their name or to take out the LDS in their titles and a friend that works for the church educational system has told us that they strongly discourage using LDS in the title. Therefore, before we “get the call” we want to change it now to avoid logo and naming in the future. The LDSHomeschoolConference.com website will still remain active and will direct people to the new web page, CalledToLearn.com.
We chose Called to Learn because it describes what we are about - we feel learning is a calling not just to learn, but to better ourselves, our family and others too. ;) A few weeks ago a question came up on our Facebook group, “How do you incorporate the gospel into your schooling?” The answers greatly varied. I complied a list of their suggestions:
